Craps (Dice)

Craps is an energetic dice game based on the number 7 and is played with two dice. It is commonly found in casinos and is known for its community aspect, as players typically bet together against the house. The game can seem complicated due to its varied betting options and rules, but it revolves primarily around the “pass” and “don’t pass” bets.

How Craps is Played:

  1. Come-Out Roll:
    • The game starts with what is known as the “come-out roll.” One player, the “shooter,” throws the dice. Players around the table make initial bets on the “pass line” or the “don’t pass line.”
    • If the come-out roll is a 7 or 11, pass line bets win and don’t pass bets lose. This scenario ends the round.
    • If the come-out roll is 2, 3, or 12 (known as “craps”), pass line bets lose and don’t pass bets win (except on a 12, where the don’t pass bets are typically “pushed” or tied).
    • Any other number rolled (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) becomes the “point.”
  2. Point Phase:
    • After the point is established, the shooter continues to roll the dice.
    • The goal now is to roll the point number again before rolling a 7.
    • If the shooter rolls the point again, pass line bets win and don’t pass bets lose.
    • If the shooter rolls a 7 before the point number (called “sevening out”), pass line bets lose and don’t pass bets win.

Types of Bets:

  • Pass Line Bet: Bet on the shooter to win; win on a come-out of 7 or 11, lose on 2, 3, or 12, and if a point is established, win if that point is rolled again before a 7.
  • Don’t Pass Line Bet: Opposite of the pass line bet; win on come-out of 2 or 3, lose on 7 or 11, 12 is a tie, and if a point is set, win if a 7 is rolled before the point is repeated.
  • Come Bet: Similar to the pass line bet but made after the point is established.
  • Don’t Come Bet: Like the don’t pass bet but made after the point is set.
  • Field Bet: One-roll bet that wins if 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12 is rolled, with varying payouts.
  • Place Bets: Bet that a certain number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) will be rolled before a 7.
  • Proposition Bets: High-risk bets that result in large payouts. These bets are decided in a single dice roll.

Craps is known for its lively atmosphere, with players often cheering or commiserating together. The social aspect of craps, along with its intricate array of betting options, makes it a standout game in the casino environment.
